  • about me

What makes me, me?  Well.  My life is shared with my husband, Brian, four dogs, one cat and two horses.  Oh and throw a few chickens into the mix.  Whew, what a mouthful.  But I wouldn't have it any other way.  I am a small town girl.  I feel lucky to live in such a beautiful state, Michigan.  I heart all things rustic and furry.  Simple things make me smile.  I love spontaneity and wish I were better at it.  Real moments in life, to me, are special.  Nature is special.  Being able to see the beauty in the small things has allowed me to become a better photographer.  I am inspired daily.

My approach on photography tends to be a more casual, documentary style.  I shoot on location and use natural light whenever possible.  I like honey tones and vintage washes.  I love smiles and giggles, serious stares and raw emotion.

I also love wagging tails, furry paws and slobbery toys.

I'm happy.  I am blessed.  I love what I do.

my life – wednesday randoms

This weekend my mother showed up with pretty much the coolest bag ever.  No really.  Completely cool.  That is right.  Read the label.  The bag is one hundred percent made out of an old banner from the Grand Rapids Public Museum.  Like the ones that you see hanging outside advertising the newest exhibit.  This one is made from a Leonardo Divinci banner.  Awesomeness.

  • I have taken a big interest in the history of Great Lake Shipwrecks.  Books.  Movies.  You name it.
  • We own a movie called Ice Bridge – Mackinac’s Island’s Hidden Season.  It has been watched about 1,000 times.  This past week made it 1,001.  Love this movie.  Read about it here.
  • Speaking of Mackinac Island, I find it completely magical.  Visiting never gets old.
  • I am just a wee bit excited for Colorado.  31 days and counting.  And trust me, I am counting.
  • Two household chores I adore doing:  laundry and emptying the dishwasher.  Is there something wrong with me?
  • Speaking of laundry, does anyone else remove nice warm blankets from the dryer and just stand there wrapped up in them?  I have been known to stand there for about five minutes taking in the nice yummy warmness and fabric softener smell.
  • This past weekend we broke down and turned the heat back on.  Boo.
  • On Friday we got together with our fellow roadtripping friends.  Dessert was our responsibility.  Brian got in a mood and decided baking the brownies was his thing.  Watching him read the brownie box and follow step by step instructions…adorable.  Just saying.
  • I fell head over heals in love with him yet again.
  • Our fluff of a cat decides next to my head is the only appropriate place to sleep at night.  Seriously?
  • So, my big news of the week.  It’s kinda embarrassing.  Well, I was pretty much mortified.  On Saturday, while photographing a wedding, I fell out of the limo, split open my knee and could not  get it to stop bleeding the rest of the night.  A big thank you to Mr. Cop for being parked in the same area as we were and giving me gauze and bandages to help get the situation under control.  A huge hug to Tracy and Andy for being a pretty much awesome and understanding bride and groom.  Much appreciation to the bridal party who brought me ice and medicine while I ate dinner at the reception.  And a thumbs up for me because I was wearing black pants, closed toed shoes, didn’t drop my camera and finished out the night still snapping pictures.  Again I will say, seriously mortified.
  • We had plans on Sunday to hike Sleeping Bear Dunes with my mother.  I refused to alter these plans and so I took my swollen, stiff and bruised knee all the way up to Glen Arbor and back.  It was very ambitious of me.  Especially on our 2.8 mile hike.  My body now hates me.
  • I am absolutely smitten over each comment you all leave on my blog.  Hugs to each one of you.
  • I watched a news report about how just one fast food meal can put stress on your heart AND raise your blood pressure from trying to digest the sodium and fat.  This will haunt me forever.
  • And lastly, while riding your bike on Mackinac Island, if you go above the posted speed limit you can receive not only a speeding ticket but points on your driver’s license.  No joke.  And no, I do not know this from experience.  Do you really think I can pedal that fast?

Many smiles.  Ashley.

Colene - Oh joy – I just looked at your Hailey pics and now this. My day is complete! :)

Mary - absolutely love the bag. I fell a kindred spirit with you, I also fell on my knee and didn’t brake the glass pan that the food was in. Someone told me “Mom mode”. Hope knee is better soon

Erin Rodriguez - ohohoh….you and I have more in common than I ever thought!

A couple years ago my uncle actualy took us scuba diving on one of the shipwrecks off of a shore in Munsing.

I love the history of the UP including the shipwrecks!

Heather - I also enjoy doing laundry. I look forward to going to the laundromat with my mom every weekend. :)

april - Owie, hope your knee feels better soon! Love the cool new bag!!

Emily - ooooo I love that bag!!! very cool!! and I’m so sorry you fell last weekend – that was really nice of them to take care of you!

The Retired One - I had no idea about the speeding on the bike thing on Mackinac Island..but I have no fear…I haven’t been on a bike in years. ha
Did I tell you I worked on Mackinac Island when I was in high school as a maid? My brother worked at the Grand and I at another hotel which name escapes me..I think it was called the Iroquois?
Anyway it was awesome. So sorry to hear about your knee..how painful! What a trooper you were to keep getting photographs. I am sure they appreciated it…but I hope it gets better and you have less pain.
