  • about me

What makes me, me?  Well.  My life is shared with my husband, Brian, four dogs, one cat and two horses.  Oh and throw a few chickens into the mix.  Whew, what a mouthful.  But I wouldn't have it any other way.  I am a small town girl.  I feel lucky to live in such a beautiful state, Michigan.  I heart all things rustic and furry.  Simple things make me smile.  I love spontaneity and wish I were better at it.  Real moments in life, to me, are special.  Nature is special.  Being able to see the beauty in the small things has allowed me to become a better photographer.  I am inspired daily.

My approach on photography tends to be a more casual, documentary style.  I shoot on location and use natural light whenever possible.  I like honey tones and vintage washes.  I love smiles and giggles, serious stares and raw emotion.

I also love wagging tails, furry paws and slobbery toys.

I'm happy.  I am blessed.  I love what I do.

rachel – senior lifestyle photographer

This year I have had the privilege of photographing an area that is fairly new to me.  High school seniors.  I pretty much love every aspect of it.  The locations, fashions and personalities.  Rachel is a senior at Fremont High School and a total blast to work with.  She wanted something different for her session; score.  Love it.  And I was so excited to see that Rachel’s fashion sense and the locations I chose meshed perfectly.  This girl totally can rock it in front of the camera.  Brace yourself, I could not narrow down which images I wanted to share from this session.  Rachel, you are simply fabulous.

Many smiles.  Ashley.

Lisa Portenga - Gorgeous as usual Ashley – SCORE!

Allison - WOWZERS! Those are awesome. Love the location, the lighting, the subject. Thats a triple score if you ask me ;)

sean - STUNNING! amazing variety, love these, ashley! inspiring set!

Emily - Great variety, Ashley, and I LOVE the image of her eyelashes!!

brianna phelan - What a beautiful girl – that smile is stunning. Love the image marked 3309 – great look you captured.

my life – wednesday randoms

Meet Mr. Sock Monkey.  He is Alger’s, our newest addition’s, toy.  I may have let out a little “awe” when I first picked him out at the store, thinking what an adorable little toy this would make.  Silly of me to think he would remain cute for long.  Within the first few hours Mr. Sock Monkey already had multiple holes and the stuffing ripped out.  I was overly delighted to go around the house picking up little tuffs of stuffing.  Big white blobs of it.  At least Alger has managed to keep most of her chewing to Mr. Sock Monkey and not our household possessions.

  • Brian and I spent the end of last week/weekend in the Upper Peninsula.  So.  Much.  Fun.  Most of this week’s randoms.  Okay.  All of this week’s randoms will be about our time there.
  • We decided to leisurely take our time driving up to the Mackinaw Bridge  on Thursday.  We followed Lake Michigan up and drove through Traverse City, Charlevoix and Petoskey.  Gorgeous country this is.
  • In each town we would pick out our favorite homes, cottages and boats in the marina’s.
  • Who knows, maybe someday one of these towns will be our residence.  Hmmm.
  • When we arrived at the Bridge we decided to explore Mackinaw City and stay the night.  Not having previously made hotel reservations, we took one of the last remaining rooms in the City.  To our surprise our room had a jacuzzi tub.  It was heart shaped, red and surround by mirrors.  Oh.  My.  Word.  I felt dirty as soon as I stepped in the room.
  • Of course I had to stop in the Mackinaw City book store and finger through the Michigan section.  So many good titles.  Brian gave me one look and handed over his wallet.  He knows me too well.
  • The next morning I left Brian sleeping in bed, stopped at the lobby for some coffee, purchased the St. Ignace Times and walked down to the base of the Mackinaw Bridge to watch the sunrise.  The morning could not have been any better.
  • Later that day as we set out for Iron Mountain, Brian was less than thrilled that I still had not made hotel reservations for the next two nights stay.  What can I say, I love spontaneity.  Brian would call it something else.
  • No worries though, after arriving in Iron Mountain we had plenty of hotels/motels to choose from and easily found a room.  One without a jacuzzi tub.
  • On Friday night we picked up Little Ceasears pizza took it back to our room.  We spent the rest of the evening watching cable t.v.  An exciting evening, I know.  It felt so good to relax.
  • The wedding on Saturday was more than gorgeous.  Vanessa and Jeff’s love that day was perfect.
  • Brian was a total rockstar second shooter.  He looked handsome in his dress shirt and slacks.  So much so in fact that I may have kept eyeing him the entire night.
  • I love my husband.
  • Did you know Iron Mountain is in the central time zone?  It was a different sort of feeling still being in the same state but a different time.
  • We started to head home on Sunday morning but decided to take another detour and head up to Crisp Point Lighthouse and Whitefish Point.  I cannot visit the Upper Peninsula and not see Lake Superior.
  • And lastly, if you have never crossed over that amazing Mackinaw Bridge, please do so.  At once.  I mean immediately.  Do not pass go.  Do not collect your $200.  The Upper Peninsula will capture you and hold your hearts.

Many smiles.  Ashley.

Mary - I am glad you had an awesome weekend, you deserved some time to chill

The Retired One - Gosh, I love Whitefish Point and the Crisp point lighthouse..I took a ton of photos there too…last year and posted them..the day we were there it was freezing cold with a hard wind, but the white caps were awesome…and I never tire of the bridge either….it is just magical in those places.

Laura Radniecki - Does Brian like to second shoot for you?? Matt tries his absolute hardest to humor me… but it’s really like pulling teeth. I think a large part is that my backup camera needs a major overhaul and once it does, maybe I can spark a creative gene in him.

Your life sounds so idyllic. I love it. :)

sean - ha! monopolyisms! you rock :) you’re such an explorer and appreciator. love that.

Many smiles.  Ashley.

april - what a beautiful couple!!

out of town and no wednesday randoms

Yes yes yes. It was Wednesday yesterday and I didn’t have a random post. Boo on me. But I had good reason. I spent the evening with Brea and her mother, shooting her senior session. We stayed until the last available light had left the sky. By the time I drove home, downloaded and backed-up my cards and blogged her just one, my eyelids were heavyyyyy.

And….this morning Brian and I are headed to the Upper Peninsula again. What? Really? Yes. But for another good reason. Vanessa and Jeff’s Iron Mountain wedding. So excited! We figured we would slowly make our way up there and explore Iron Mountain for a couple days before. And of course it didn’t take much twisting of Brian’s arm to have him travel along with me.

I will be back Sunday evening and will return emails and calls then. Hugs.

Many smiles. Ashley.

DVMsWife - Have a great time up there but be prepared for seeing trees changing leaf colors. Say it isn’t so! Do you not love being a photographer or what? Travel to the U.P. to take wedding pictures? Someone please pinch you! LOL!
Enjoy Ashley!

The Retired One - You will love the Iron Mt. area too! Little waterfall spots and lakes…can’t wait to see your photos!
